Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the VARANASI KYOTO INITIATIVE, envisioned by India Center Foundation, is working towards evolving Varanasi into a Smart Heritage City that is aesthetically inspiring, environmentally friendly and sustainable inspired by how Kyoto has transformed itself over the decades.

The initiative aims to bring India and Japan closer by connecting the heritage cultural cities of Varanasi and Kyoto as an initiative of the India-Japan Global Partnership (IJGP).

Partnership Agreement

Varanasi-Kyoto Partnership Agreement was signed by then Indian Ambassador Mrs. Deepa Wadhwa and Kyoto Mayor Mr. Daisaku Kadokawa in presence of Hon. Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and Hon. Prime Minister of Japan Shri Shinzo Abe on 30 Aug, 2014 ​

Varanasi Kyoto partner city agreement, initiated by India Center Foundation, presented to Mr. Daisaku Kadokawa, Mayor of Kyoto by Mr. Vibhav Kant Upadhyay, Chairman of India Center Foundation.

VAKYO is based on the Alternative Development Model- which is a new framework for socio-economic development that espouses non-exploitation of people, resources and environment at its core and works towards creating and executing initiatives for equitable and empowering opportunities. ENERGY-EFFICIENCY, ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY, SUSTAINABILITY EES is operating framework that addresses the problems of dwindling non-renewable energy sources, apathetic policies and economic disparity. This is universal in nature & the base of any system or outcomes under the Alternative Development Model.

WHY VAKYO

Kyoto is a successful example of restoring an old heritage city into a new Smart Heritage city.
We can learn from the process of Kyoto transformation and adopt the learning in transforming Varanasi into a smart Heritage City owing to the striking similarities between Kyoto and Varanasi.
